This fun and meaningful piece is inspired by the Catholic origin of pretzels and the Lord’s Prayer. Pretzels were first baked by a monk in either Italy or southern France sometime during the 1400s. The monk twisted leftover dough to resemble crossed arms, which was a traditional prayer pose at the time. He also said that the three holes in the pretzel symbolized the Holy Trinity. The monk gave these pretzels to his students as a reward, calling them “pretiola,” which is Latin for “little rewards.” Over time, this twisted snack became especially popular during Lent, as it was ideal for fasting since it contains no eggs or dairy. The reference to the Lord’s Prayer adds an extra layer of meaning, tying everything together. The use of layers and different shades add depth and dimension, creating a 3D effect.
